Modern British Values
North East Derbyshire Support Centre believes that British Values are embedded right across the curriculum. At NEDSC we strive to ensure that our pupils are nurtured and are taught a clear set of values and a sound understanding of tolerance, community cohesion, and have a fundamental understanding of rights and responsibilities.

Student council at Hasland, which meets regularly to discuss key issues affecting students
Students are encouraged to treat others (staff and students) with respect and tolerance
Students are encouraged to make positive choices about their behaviour, guided by individual targets
At NEDSC democracy is taken very seriously. Children are actively encouraged to have a voice and share their views and opinions regularly through various mediums, notably our Student Council, but also in meetings and discussions. Children voice ideas and vote on issues. In addition, mock elections run in PHSE/Citizeship, with students learning how a ballot box works.
The Rule of Law
The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the school day, as well as when dealing with behaviour and at school meetings. Children are taught: the value and reasons behind laws; that they govern and protect us; the responsibilities that this involves; and the consequences when laws are broken.
Our Behaviour policy is discussed on induction, referred to regularly and consistently upheld. Pupils are completely aware of the sanctions in place and know that actions always have consequences. Parents are kept informed on behaviour. Visits from authorities such as the Police and strong links with the PCSOs help reinforce this message.
Within school, children are actively encouraged to make decisions and choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young children to take risks and make choices safely. Children are encouraged to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms, and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through events such as Safer Internet Day.
In addition, pupils are encouraged to involve themselves within community life. To date we have held many fund raising events, to support local and national organisations.
Mutual respect is at the heart of our values; a key expectation that forms part of our ethos. Children learn that their behaviours have an affect on their own rights, and those of others. All members of the school community are encouraged to treat each other with tolerance and respect.
Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
NEDSC sites are situated in areas which are not culturally diverse, therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with our students. We have planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our Citizenship and PSHE teaching reinforces this. In the past we have undertaken visits, so that students can experience differing faiths first hand; previously we have visited a Mosque and the Holocaust Centre.
